WE'RE MORE THAN JUST A LOG HOME COMPANY
Ed Schoen
My interest in log homes started in 1971 when I visited a Real Log Home Model south of Ithaca, NY. I was enchanted with the visual character, strength, and process of assembling the pre-cut package. I have a dairy and apple farming background so we were always building something. At Cornell, I enjoyed the engineering courses. The sales and design came naturally as my passion grew in the industry. I learned what works, and definitely what does not work when crafting a log home. Forethought during design and proper ongoing maintenance will ensure the longevity of the structure. I visited Switzerland’s Ballenberg Outdoor Museum several times which houses over 70 log homes from all over the country that date back to the late 1400s. In Finland, I saw log structures dating for the 1200’s and the Viking era. In Russia, I visited homesteads housing both the family and the livestock under one roof built in the 1700’s. In 1972, I built my own 1554 sq. ft. gambrel style home, based on a site overlooking some of the most beautiful drumlins of the Finger Lakes. In 1980, a 256 sq. ft. office wing was added, and in 1989, a 240 sq. ft. solar addition with yellow pine arches was added with a sloping glass wall to the south. Pre-designed kits were pretty much the standard in the early 70’s, and I sold for the local Real Log Home Representative. In late 1975, Dick Wyffels of Canandaiugua, NY, and I were asked to franchise with Real Log Homes and Timberpeg Post and Beam Homes (formally Cluster Shed). Our chemistry was electric as we worked with new friends throughout the area and sold 50 homes the first year. Helping those who had dreams; and we could be a part of those dreams coming true was a real joy that was infectious. Soon, custom designing came into the picture; and new tools with the advent of computers and new design programs helped visualize what was possible. Dick went on to the Promised Land in 1983 to assist the log construction and his son, Rick partnered with me till 1993. I soon became known as, “The Log Home Guy”, and to date, I have helped over 700 families design, manage their budget, build, and settle into their dream Real Log Home. In 1989, I started an annual newsletter, “Growth Rings”, to help document and share the events of the year. I feel truly blessed to be able to work with individuals who have the same passion as I have. Together, we explore what is possible. -𝓔𝓭 |
